Cultivating Minds was an Ecotherapy group run by RB Mind that supported people to improve their mental health and wellbeing by getting outside and in touch with nature. The project started in June 2007 and ended with a farewell event in May 2015 at Crane Park allotment which was the home of the project for many years.
The group was a chance to get outside, socialise and stay active through gardening at our beautiful allotments, nature walks, or creative and educational workshops. Since the project started the dedication and energy of local people and volunteers has yielded years of growing vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers, and provided a tranquil and secluded space for relaxation, discussion, workshops and exercise.
Research findings from Ecominds have shown that 69% of participants experience significant increases in mental wellbeing through Ecotherapy. It is known that many people that usually do not attend other services or who are less likely to exercise can find the group an accessible and empowering way to get support for their mental health and wellbeing.
Ecotherapy will no longer be a separate project but we are aiming to integrate it into our existing services such as the Wellbeing Centre and Carers in Mind.
Cultivating Minds Testimonials:
“Getting outside is the best thing for me, it gives me hope.”
"I like going to the allotment, I like planting strawberries and seeing them grow."
“I’m diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Digging, planting and growing flowers and vegetables has made me feel I can achieve something – as well as improve my concentration. Getting to know other people in the group made me realise they were not out to get me.”
