Aims:

To identify, explore and celebrate the heritage associated with mental health and well being, through oral history interviews, mainstream exhibitions, and public documentary viewings and lectures. These done as a way to educate, conserve and raise awareness in order to reduce the stigma associated with mental health.

Through RB Mind's 50 year anniversary, conserve and enhance Richmond's varied mental health heritage, and taking heritage material to different audiences in the community by conducting a number of public talks on the issues and lessons arising from this particular area of work.

To demonstrate the evolution and development of voluntary and statutory services and the impact made on individuals and communities for the past 50 years. Using oral history from previous generations as a way to educate the next generation

Rationale:

‘Reflection’ is a project that aims to celebrate 50 years of service by the local association of Mind in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.  It also aims to capture RB Mind’s story during this time using first hand lived accounts from service users and other stake holders.

During the past 50 years there have been many changes in the way individuals experience mental health taking into account the Mental Health Acts or 1959, 1983, 2007 and the introduction of National Service Framework.  The project intends for the first time to give a voice to the protagonists of this story.

There will be a strong Mental Health focus within this project within the community of LBRUT to celebrate this narrative.  The project will also tackle the stigma associated with Mental Health in conjunction with National Mind’s ‘Time to Change´ campaign.  So this project, collecting the oral history of RB Mind over the last 50 years, will also aim to break through this stigma and raise awareness in the community of Mental Health in Richmond and the role of RB Mind.

How:

Reflection will do this by giving the community of Richmond with its many stakeholders opportunities to learn more about Mental health and its heritage in the borough through first hand and lived experiences.

The program includes the collection of oral histories from 60 individuals.  Participants will include a variety of stakeholders including service users, carers, volunteers, staff, trustees, community members including borough officials and councilors as well as members of the public.  The information collected will be displayed in 5 exhibitions, which will include the oral histories gathered together with other historical articles and artifacts.  A documentary film will be produced and presentations made to members of the public to raise awareness through discussion groups.

This will be to include as wide an audience a possible to capture the spoken word and experience for future generations. ‘Reflection’ will offer the opportunity for public learning and education about Mental Health and RB Mind in their role for the well being of Richmond residents.
