Project Overview:

The Richmond Time Bank is a project which enables people to give their time and skills to others or the community and to receive the time and skills of others in return. The unit of exchange is time and not monetary value.

In 2009 RB Mind embarked upon the creation of the Richmond Time Bank.  This community-building tool is based on the idea that everyone’s time is equal in worth and encourages people to give and take time.  The aim of this project is to provide opportunities for people to interact and contribute to their community, as well as find access to support they may need, thus allowing for the maintenance of general wellbeing.  Not just Mind service users, but anyone is welcome to apply for membership, to benefit not only by becoming more active citizens, but also through accessing opportunities for acquiring new skills and experience.

What is a Time Bank?

A time bank is a way for people to share skills with others in their community and be rewarded for it – in time. For every hour of time you give providing a service for another participant, you receive one time credit.

What can you do with your Time Credits?

You can exchange your time credits when you need a service from someone else. You can give them to a member of your family or anyone else who needs some help, as well as treat others to some of the perks on offer.  You can save them to use in the future.

Who can receive time credits?

Anyone can participate. Young people can share know-how in whatever interests them, the elderly and housebound can cook for events or make friendly phone calls. Age, ability, state of health, lack of finance or limited mobility are no bars to participating in the time bank.

The Time Bank

When you join the scheme we will open an account for you.  Your hours will be recorded on a computer and we will send you a regular statement of the time you have given and received.

You Give

A few hours of your spare time when you want to, doing the things you enjoy.  If you incur travel costs, we can reimburse these.

You Receive

The opportunity to get some help for yourself when you need it.  You can also take advantage of many training or social events which we organise.  You also get the satisfaction from making the quality of life better for someone else.

An extra bonus for you

You can give twice by donating your time credits to someone else who needs them more than you do.

If you would like to take part in any Time Bank activity or become a member to offer or take advantage of the many skills available in the Richmond Time Bank please contact Elaine Ceatano via e-mail at:Elaine.caetano@rbmind.org or call on 07545933156.
