Definition of a Crisis
If you feel you can not cope on your own, and feel you at danger to yourself or others than you may need some crisis support.
The generic definition of a Crisis is: 'A time-limited period of psychological disequilibrium, precipitated by a sudden significant change in a person's life situation, or the eruption of volatile emotions attached to an individual's personal history, which results in demands for internal and external adjustment which for the time being are not possible for the individual to achieve alone'.
Crises Support Objectives:
Once you access a mental health provider who does offer crises support, the objectives of that interaction should be the following:
- The psychological resolution of the immediate crisis and restoration to at least the level of functioning that existed prior to the crisis.
- To assist those with repetitive and regular chronic patterns of non-coping, by incorporating and interrupting any such patterns in ways this would strengthen the person’s ability to cope.
