What is Mental Health?

Any person at a certain point in their life may experience some form of mental health problem. It can be because someone who is near to them died, because they feel lonely and isolated in a country that is unknown, or for example because of previous experiences in the past that make them have nightmares or feel fearful of going out on the street alone.

For some people, these problems become so great that they are no longer able to deal with them on their own or with the help of family and friends. If this is the case, it is important to look for help from the GP, a social worker, or a community organisation.

Sometimes, simply getting to know other people at a social event, attending English classes or learning about benefits that you are entitled to will already help you cope better in your life.

Other times, it might be important to talk to someone individually about your feelings and experiences, such as a counsellor or mental health professional.

In any case, it can be beneficial for both yourself and other people you know, to be aware of what services there are to help you look after your mental health and well-being. The BME Community Development Worker can answer any questions you might have about mental health and can tell you about the services that are available in your local area.

What does BME Community Development mean for you as an individual?

Whether you are worried about someone in your family or are going through a difficult time in your life, the Community Development worker will talk to you and then tell you about the right place where you can find a service that suits your needs.

  • Give you information on what services are available for you in your area. This could be counselling, but also just a place to get together and meet other people.

What does a BME Community Development Worker NOT do?

  • Give regular one to one support
  • Provide counselling
