People's Network Open Day
Richmond Borough Mind held an Open Day on the 21st of September in order to celebrate and raise awareness of the People's Network, a peer led project that operates across Richmond.
The People's Network trains and supports individuals who have or are recovery from mental health distress to lead and run a number of activity groups in the borough. We run training sessions twice a year and offer ongoing support. Currently the People's network has 7 weekly groups that take place in various locations in the borough and offer varied activities. For more information on these groups and other RB Mind activities please click here.
Our Open Day was a opportunity for individuals to meet our peer volunteers, and find out how they can attend one of our groups, or become a peer volunteer leader themselves.
The day will have a vaiety of guests including Deputy Mayor Bond, and a comedian from Cracking up doing a short sketch.

What is it?
The People's Network aims to enable, empower and involve individuals regardless of their mental health to participate in or run peer led groups, to be active and flourish in their community.
The People's Network is made up of groups run by and for people with experience of mental distress. The groups are run by Peer Volunteers focusing on offering groups that will improve your well being. They can be about lots of things; having fun, making friends, moral support, sharing your culture, sharing a skills or learning a new one. The groups can take place any where, could be in a library, community centre or a cafe'.
What do you need to become a Peer Volunteer?
All Peer Volunteers must have an ongoing or past personal experience of mental distress. The projet will provide training and ongoing support that will help prepare you to run a group. The training is 35 hours and this takes place over several weeks.
The training will cover:
- Role of Peer support Volunteer
- Working with challenging behaviour
- Working with difference (equal opportunties)
- Boundaries
- Confidentiality
- Basic First Aid (Certificate)
- Health and Safety
- Assertiveness
Is the People’s Network for me?
Yes! If you are feeling isolated and/have experience of mental distress. Although the groups are located within the Borough of Richmond, you do not have to live within the Borough to attend. No GP referral is required; please contact People Network directly if you would like to join in any of the groups.
What kind of groups can I run?
The groups can be on any subjeect that would contribute to your wellbeing and the wellbeing of your peers: having fun, making friends, moral support, sharing your culture, sharing a skill or learning a new one. All groups that run have a two week break every ten weeks.
